Tool of the month: checklist for your next walk-around
- Set the time aside. Put 40 minutes on your schedule. Allow for “transit” time
- Be coordinated. Make sure everyone on the leadership team knows their assignment to avoid duplication
- Use a map. It may sound silly, but a facility map helps keep everyone organized, focused. You can even create facility “sectors” to ensure everyone can get to their assigned area.
- Be informal. No set agenda, “I want to hear what’s on your mind.” 80% or more listening, 20% or less talking
- Take notes. Be prepared to take notes. Advise attendees you’ll be taking notes for action and see if anyone has concerns
- Follow up. Be sure to follow up on questions, comments that require action
- Share feedback. Share your walk-around feedback with leadership team so that others can get calibrated. Maximize the value of individual data and experiences
